For anyone who has been following my trip in Nepal you’ll know that the last few weeks of my trekking holiday turned into an aid mission. There have been a few big earthquakes & hundreds of aftershocks to deal with but after experiencing the beauty of this country & it’s people I felt compelled to stay & help rebuild as much as I could.
On the 25th of April this year, an Earthquake tore up and destroyed much of Nepal. Many people’s lives were affected by this disaster both in the capital Kathmandu but in often cases, most severely in rural Nepal. I happened to be trekking in the Khumbu region at the time of the Earthquake and rather than call my trek off and retreat for what might have been safer grounds, I decided I would stay on and help assist in the efforts to bring aid to the region.
Many villages were affected badly here in the Khumbu region & I noticed that many children were being sent home as their school was closed. I wanted to help every village so instead of helping one family or business I chose to direct my services to The Hillary School in Khumjung. The school was built in 1966 by Sir Edmund Hillary & a group of volunteers as a way to give back to a country that had given him so much, I figured I would do the same with the re-build effort. The Hillary School has students who come from all over the Khumbu region to attend and in many cases if they’re from far away villages they will board here also.
Sadly, as a result of the Earthquake, the school suffered a great deal of damage, the boarding lodges were all damaged with walls caving in on the children’s beds (thankfully the Earthquake happened when no children were inside the dorms or classrooms), beds were damaged, windows broken and smashed, walls of classrooms caving in & causing the majority of „finiancial damage“ as this resulted in the destruction of many computers, science equipment, tables, chairs and other school supplies.
My efforts here have been to assist in ensuring the boarding lodges and classrooms were all re-built in a safe manner and the children could return to their classes or their sleeping quarters as soon as possible and with as little disruption to the school as possible.
The earthquake caused a great deal of damage to the school but with help of local builders & donations from friends & family we’ve managed to repair three dormitory walls, countless beds, ceilings that were caved in & we’ve strengthened many of the roofs against future damage. Kids are back at school but much of their equipment like computers & science equipment was destroyed.
I’m happy I was able to make a difference to people’s lives in this amazing country. Thanks to your donations & trust this was possible.
To all who’ve donated, a massive thank you from me & everyone we meet here in Nepal, we’re all forever grateful & I personally am stoked to have friends like these!!
